The Temple Trap

May 2010 | Siem Reap, Cambodia | magˈnifəsəns

First things first, a little bit of history. The name "Siem Reap" actually means the "Defeat of Siam" and refers to a century-old bloodbath. It used to be the "the place to be" back in the 1960s, attracting a steady steam of the rich and famous. After 3 decades of slumber, it is well and truly back as one of the most popular destinations in Asia now.

I wanted to visit Siem Reap for 1 reason and 1 reason only: Angkor Wat. The temple ruins (still in respectable condition) of Angkor, to me, is the true representation of the pinnacle of an ancient civilization. I have seen pictures and documentaries of the magnificent temple complex but nothing could substitute the experience of being physically there; in contact with ancient history. The entire Angkor Archaeological Park contains the great remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire...all the way from the 9th to the 15th century. Somehow, the thought of roaming around the same complex once inhabited by kings gives me a sense of subtle adrenaline rush. Heh!

Accommodation: Central Boutique Angkor Hotel

Maltida and I decided to use Central Boutique as our base for our stay in Cambodia. Heres why. 1) Cost is reasonable, coupled with great homely hospitality! 2) Cozy pool for relaxation after a hectic day of temple-hopping 3) Great location; only 5 minutes to the exuberant nightlife and 20 minutes to Angkor Wat via tuk-tuk. At this point, I must stress the importance of hiring the right tuk-tuk driver in Siem Reap. If anyone is travelling to Siem Reap and wants to hire a reliable chap, do let me know and I will provide his contact.

in repose.

Once there, you will be swarmed with guides who want to provide their services (for a fee!) While that option might be really convenient for some, I strongly recommend that you buy a guidebook (US $5-7) from one of the booths outside the temple and explore on your own if you have the time and patience. Every temple in Angkor Wat is unique, with its own colorful history and architectural theme.

Even today, visitors will continue to be awe-struck by the sheer artistry and refinement of these carvings.

This carving depicts the division between Heaven and Hell. Look again, you will see why. :)

And for those who didnt catch the pun in the Title, "Temper Trap" is actually an incredible band.
